Drawing with Pen and Ink on Scratchboard | En Plein Air Sketching in Forest Park, St. Louis, MO
Video shows the process of sketching en plein air at Forest Park, St. Louis, MO, and then drawing from the sketch with pen and ink on scratchboard. Most of the pen and ink was drawn without a pencil outline as a guide. And the inking was done with a Crow Quill pen, which surprisingly work fine on the Claybord.

Note 1: I try to show my work process as accurately as possible. However, I do take some liberties with the editing of the videos. For instance, almost all my videos use time lapse to speed up the process. I would like to show an entire drawing in real time, but even my simplest drawings can take a full day--major drawings can take one to two weeks. No one wants to watch me draw for two weeks. Also, some of my edits are just for my own enjoyment. Video is a hobby for me, and I like to experiment.
Note 2: I call my drawing medium scratchboard, and it is. However, a more accurate description of my technique would be "pen and ink on white scratchboard." I work on white scratchboard, and I draw with pen and ink the parts that have a value of 50 percent gray or less. For areas that are 50 percent gray or darker, I block in with solid black ink and scratch in white lines for detail.
Note 3: I am showing how I work. However, although I have been an illustrator for over 35 years, there may be times when I am doing it wrong or not doing it in the best way.
Note 4: I am a commercial artist--not a fine artist. My work is meant to be printed. My clients don't usually care what my work would look like hanging on a wall. They only care what it looks like when printed in their ad, book, billboard, package, etc. Almost all the drawings in my videos have been used commercially.
Materials I use: Ampersand Claybord, white, 1/8 inch thick; Micron pens; Crow quill pen; Higgins Black Magic ink or Koh-I-Noor ink; Scratch-Art knives.

What if you make a mistake? How do you go back?
Scratchboard has a clay surface that can be scrached off with a sharp knife. If you make a mistake, it can be scratched away and re-inked.

@@MichaelHalbert1952 appreciate it! I'm still scared after I gouged my thumb on my previous attempt :D But I think we were using the wrong type of wood. Care to share what type of wood you used? Also, the name of your woodcut had everyone in stitches!
@@machemyburgh470 I use Shina plywood. I get it from McClains online. Actually, I like linocut just as well. The battleship gray linoleum, 1/8 inch.

Love your work. How do you transfer the image digitally?
I don't transfer digitally. I do a sketch by hand on tracing paper and then transfer that to scratchboard by hand burnishing.

hard to believe i am seeing this ten years after. :)
confused about this being called sratchboard, which I think of as black over clay. Isn't this plain white clayboard? Inked balck, and then scratched back, and then coloured? The handpan part of the music is so synched to the scratching back to white. I bet that part's quite addictive-- looks like such fun.
I there are differences of opinions about what scratchboard is. Some think it has to be done on clay board that has been completely covered with black ink and then all the drawing is done by scratching off black. Others, like me, think it's better to start with the white clay and use a combination of pen and ink drawing and scratching out-I draw in pen and ink on areas that are lighter than 50 percent in value and brush on solid black and schatch out white lines in areas that will be darker than 50 percent in value.

It is. They didn't call it AI back when I used it. It was called text to speech and wasn't as good as the AI voices now. My own voice is not up to voice over standards so text to speech kinda solved that problem, but now that it has become clear to me that these voice generators are AI, I won't be using it on new videos. I'm not a fan of AI especially in the art world. But it's going to be hard to avoid AI altogether.

For a copper stitch, Durer worked several months for one piece, if i remember correctly it was not uncommon for him work 3 months for a piece.

This drawing style caught my attention some years ago when it appeared on an olive oil bottle. I liked it very mch but didn't know what it is called. I wished I know the name of this style so that I could find out more about it. I never got to know the name of this style until yesterday (20/Mar/24) when I saw a video about scratchboard painting (also from your channel). Now I know it's called scratchboard painting.
